Old Ebbitt Grill's Oyster Riot® is one of the greatest parties of the year in Washington DC. Always held the Friday & Saturday before Thanksgiving, the Riot is DC's preeminent food & wine event. Each night, hundreds of people devour tens of thousands of oysters while enjoying the gold medal winners of the International Wines for Oysters Competition and grooving to some awesome tunes.

The first Oyster Riot was held in October 1995 to promote Old Ebbitt Grill's newly relaunched oyster bar which served 15 to 20 different varieties of oysters matched with up to 10 different types of wine. The Riot proved wildly popular with tickets often selling out within minutes of being on-sale the Tuesday after Labor Day.

In 2010, Old Ebbitt Grill joined the Shell Recycling Alliance, a project of the Oyster Recovery Partnership, a nonprofit helping to restore oyster populations in the Chesapeake Bay. To help the Alliance, a new element to the Oyster Riot was introduced, a Saturday afternoon event known as " the Matinee" is held with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Oyster Recovery Partnership.
