Crying Time

Jill Rogers and Crying Time bring their celebration of the King of Country, featuring some of the Bay Area’s top country singers interpreting the heart-breaking and boot stomping songs of George Jones, to The Chapel. From his start as a flat-topped honky tonker to his reign as king of the country crooners, George Jones’s hit-making career spanned the history of country music after WWII. This show features the hits you love, deep cuts, and duets performed by the band and their friends and special guests, who comprise some of the Bay’s most talented performers.

When they’re not delving into the music of George Jones, Jill Rogers and Crying Time play straight-up honky-tonk, 1970s cross-over country, and elegiac originals. They’ve been packing dance floors, clubs, bars, and listening rooms for a decade in Northern California’s lively country scene. With a beautiful 70’s-era voice, Jill Rogers connects with audiences through her original songs, country classics by the likes of George Jones, Bob Wills, Lynn Anderson and Jeannie C. Riley, and surprising covers of works by Glen Campbell, the Bee Gees, Gordon Lightfoot, Elvis Costello, Linda Ronstadt and more.

Backing her up, Crying Time is a musicians’ band, with a deep bench of accomplished players. Myles Boisen is an inventive guitarist who provides soulful, unpredictable, and often blistering solos, reflecting decades of experience as a session player (Tom Waits) and record producer (California Honeydrops, Club Foot Orchestra). Western swing veteran Tony Marcus (Cheap Suit Serenaders) plays the whole of American music on fiddle. Russell Kiel (bass) learned roots music from his days running sound for the original Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley, while drummer Tim Rowe comes to country music from a history of punk and avant garde performance. Crying Time is known for the variety and dynamism they bring to their interpretations of the classics and Jill’s beautiful, sad songs.

Jill Rogers delivers convincing, full-throated, but not faux-hillbilly, lead vocals... Add guest virtuoso Bobby Black on pedal steel and you have another great spin on the no-nonsense country of Bakersfield and pre-pop Nashville  in a tradition that includes Jimmie Rivers, Asleep at the Wheel, and others. Crying Time begs for a dance floor to accommodate your happy feet and a beer to catch your tears. - Derk Richardson (Oakland Magazine/ KPFA)

[Rogers] has that Iris DeMent quality to her voice that I love so much. - Ann Powers (NPR)

Country singing from Oakland standouts. Real musicians, not just stompers. Jill Rogers is an amazing singer. Just plain beautiful. - KALX Radio

Johnny & June Forever

Website

From his #1 hit “I Walk the Line” in 1956 to the iconic “Folsom Prison Blues,” many have known and loved Johnny Cash over the years. Over 90 million records sold!   No love, though, seems as great as the love that singer/songwriter June Carter had for Cash during their long years together. Though they have passed on, the passion that burned between them will always be present in their heartfelt and truthful lyrics written and performed for one another. As one of the most beloved couples in music history, Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash’s love lives on through their iconic duos and many albums recorded with each other.

Johnny Cash and June Carter were well known performers before meeting, and like their predecessors, Danny Evans and Essence of Johnny & June Forever are also seasoned artists in their own rights. Their chemistry and musicality on stage is so undeniable that many have described them as the reincarnation of Johnny & June.
