Calgary Folk Music Festival presents Kobo Town with Damase Elis live at Festival Hall on April 13!

Kobo Town is named after the historic, storied neighborhood in Port-of-Spain where calypso
was born, fronted by Trinidadian émigré songwriter Drew Gonsalves. Brooding and joyous,
intensely poetic and highly danceable, theirs is an intoxicating blend of lilting calypsonian wit,
dancehall reggae and trombone-heavy brass. It’s deeply rooted Caribbean folk music, delivered
with an indomitable energy. Kobo Town continues to redefine calypso music and push the
boundaries of its Caribbean sound with their brand new fourth album, CARNIVAL OF THE
GHOSTS. Behind the running social commentary and satirical mood, it’s a collection of songs
about the human condition – our quirks and foibles, anxieties and hopes, and the haunting
sense of impermanence and wonder that imbues our every moment with urgency and priceless

Damase Elis is a Calgary-born singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and member of the Metis Nation of Alberta. Her music aims to blend past and present sounds and is the product of a variety of influences ranging from Ella Fitzgerald to Florence Welch.  Elis previously released music under the name Riel,  including her 2017 EP Into the Waves.
