Event Details

Poet, singer and composer, ARNALDO ANTUNES was born in São Paulo in 1960. He joined the iconic Brazilian 1980s rock group Titãs, with whom he recorded seven albums. Launching a solo career in 1992, Antunes was able to meld his love of experimental music, modern dance scores, poetry and literature with his music. He released 11 well-received CDs, and published several books of poetry and essays in Brazil, Spain and Portugal.

With long-time collaborator Marisa Monte, and Carlinhos Brown, Antunes unleashed one of Brazilian music’s most popular recordings in 2002. Tribalistas was a one-off project for the three friends, but their CD spawned several international hits and was awarded a Latin Grammy in 2003.

In 2009, Antunes and his musical partner Edgard Scandurra launched a new project “A Curva da Cintura”. They began writing new songs for an album together. The Malian musician Toumani Diabaté came to complete the project, after sharing the stage in a concert at the festival Back2Black in Rio de Janeiro. The recordings were done in Bamako, Mali and São Paolo in 2011. To accompany the CD, a video documentary was made by Dora Jobim, and both were released in partnership with MTV Brazil. Scandurra and Antunes also created another new project, Pequeno Cidadão, aimed at younger audiences, with Taciana Barros and Antônio Pinto.

In celebration of his 30-year solo career, Antunes recorded "MTV Unplugged” in December 2011, followed by an extensive Brazilian tour. 2012 brings him on a rare US visit, centered around a performance as part of NYC's Carnegie Hall’s landmark Voices from Latin America series.
