Red Baraat FESTIVAL OF COLORS 2023

In its 11th year as a multi-city annual festival, Red Baraat Festival of Colors is an immersive celebration of the Indian holiday, Holi. Bringing together walks of all life through music, a montage of classic Bollywood visuals and dancing, Red Baraat delivers a show that is unparalleled.

Traditionally, Holi is marked by public gatherings of families and strangers sharing songs, dance, and the exchange of “colors.” It signifies the victory of good over evil, the arrival of spring, and for many, a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive, and repair ruptured relationships.

Red Baraat Festival of Colors debuted in 2012 at a sold out Le Poisson Rouge in New York City and then expanded to over a dozen cities in the United States. Bandleader and dhol player, Sunny Jain, curates a night of music highlighting the South Asian Diaspora through a diverse range of styles. Past festivals included DJ Rekha, Vidya Vox, Falu, Madame Gandhi, Heems (Das Racist/Swet Shop Boys), Rafiq Bhatia and Radhe Radhe: Rites of Holi (a film by the late, award-winning filmmaker, Prashant Bhargava, with score by Grammy-nominated composer, Vijay Iyer), and so many more.

The 2023 festival will visit New York City, Boston, Washington D.C., San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Seattle, St. Louis, Raleigh and more.

SUPHALA & FRIENDS

Whether she’s performing within the Indian classical music tradition or with the latest electronics, Suphala—tabla player, percussionist, composer, and producer—breaks new ground. Her deep knowledge of a wide spectrum of music, her mentoring by maestros Ustad Allarakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain, and the classical piano studies she began at age four all inform her unique compositions, highly improvisational performances, and contemporary approach—a dazzling combination that has led to her being celebrated by the New York Times, Vogue, Rolling Stone, CNN, and NPR, and making history as the first musician to play in public in Kabul, Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban.

In addition to showcasing her composition, production, and engineering skills, Suphala’s four albums reveal the breadth and depth of her influences, as well as her world-class artistic alliances: Instru Mental [Suphala Productions] features Vernon Reid and Fafu; Norah Jones and Vikter Duplaix bring their talents to The Now[Rasa/Tommy Boy]; King Britt, Harper Simon, and Rakesh Chaurasia appear on Blueprint [Suphala Productions]; and Alien Ancestry [Tzadik] features José James, Vijay Iyer, and Bill Laswell.

An intuitive performer uninhibited by genre, New York-based Suphala leads her own bands and regularly collaborates onstage and in the studio with artists such as Timbaland, Sean Lennon, Yoko Ono, and Perry Ferrell. One of the most sought-after and versatile artists today.
