Léna Bartels’ debut record ‘Preservation’ is a shifting and squirming creature that wants to be let out. Reflecting on how ideas of identity rely on the confines of words and relationships, Bartels writes characters that urgently attempt to shed past selves and grow to fit in. The music of ‘Preservation’ is necessarily genre-defying and malleable. Written in 2019, and recorded across studios in Bar Harbor, ME, Portland, OR, and Brooklyn, NY, the songs themselves are preserved in transit, as they move back and forth across the country. Based in New York, Léna Bartels is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. She holds playfulness and light alongside deep sensitivity, and her lyrics use introversion to discover magic in fine details: a small house, bird calls, and a rabbit in a jar.
