For years Will has been dividing his time between being a band leader, sideman and collaborator in a wide variety of projects in a large variety ofstyles. His Jazz/Funk band Freelance Subversives was aptly named to
describe the kinds of like-minded musicians that appear in this ensemble:
mostly top level cats that are highly in demand and work with a lot of people. The goal is to maintain a core group and pick up other members inother geographical locations for touring purposes.
Will is bringing to the Boom Boom Room a mixture of East and West.

On  drums, Will’s long time collaborator, Eric Kalb, known for his work with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Deep Banana Blackout, John Scofield,  Greyboy Allstars, Eric Krasno and more, Adam Klipple on keyboards, from  Blood Sweat and Tears, Michael Ray and the Cosmic Crew and more, plus Bay Area stalwarts and longtime homies Josh Jones on percussion and Victor Little on bass.
The bulk of the material are original Bernard compositions that maintain a danceable groove but usually maintain some quirky elements that addvariety and spice.
  Although currently a New Yorker, guitarist Will Bernard's unique voice was formed fro the most part from the rich cultural roots of the San Francisco Bay Area. Along the way he studied classical music, jazz, played in basements and coliseums and absorbed the Bay Area Multi Kulti and the New York Downtown edge.

He has performed and/or recorded with Charlie Hunter, Stanton Moore, Robert Walter, John Medeski, Bill Laswell, Ben Sidran, Peter Apfelbaum, Dr John, Tom Waits and a lot of other known and unknowns. Will can be seen working in a chameleon like way to fit into his current habitat. His 2007 CD "Party Hats" as well as his 1997 collaborative project T.J. Kirk "If Four Was One" were both nominated for Grammys. “Pond Life”, released 2022 on Dreck to Disk records is his10th album as a leader!

A band that is at the heart of Bay Area funk, soul, R&B and hip hop, responsible for creating Oakland's most prolific weekly funk and soul jam session-Oakadelic Wednesdays at the Layover. As a band, they improvise and perform styles reminiscent of Parliament Funkadelic, Robert Glasper, Roy Hargrove, Gil Evans, Miles Davis, Fela Kuti, J Dilla, Freddie Hubbard, Pink Floyd, Erykah Badu, even the symphonic sounds of Gustave Mahler, and more. With almost entirely improvised shows, the group channels spontaneity of the heart, mind and soul, sure to make you feel the funk, all with a uniquely Oak-Town twist
