For Australian bands, touring internationally has always been difficult. It’s a costly and risky undertaking, but for over a decade we’ve managed to make it work because we love playing for our legion of fans around the globe. 

The USA has always been particularly tough due to the arduous and incredibly expensive working visa process. Despite a sharp rise in application costs, we applied for our visas and followed the standard processes, but in the post-COVID era times have changed and our petition has faced unprecedented processing delays. As it stands, the wait time for a visa appointment at the US consulate in Melbourne is 220 days. Yes, you read that correctly. Our immigration lawyer has literally scoured the globe looking for consulates with openings. We’ve explored undertaking appointments in both Indonesia and the UK among other countries. While we were prepared to eat the extreme costs to make the tour happen, in the end we just couldn’t get the appointments we required.

With options running out fast, we were put in touch with a Federal government official yesterday and they are being inundated with similar situations to ours from dozens of other Australian artists. Even though the department is doing their absolute best to expedite select cases with the US consulate here, our case did not make any progress. Knowing full well that the longer we left this decision, the greater impact it would have on everyone involved in the tour, we unfortunately had to make the difficult decision today to cancel the entire Obsidian North American tour. This cancellation also unfortunately extends to the Canadian shows as just doing these isn’t viable. 

We’ve taken our time to explain this in the most detail possible, so you can understand the impossible lengths we went to in order to try and solve it. Unfortunately for us this situation was unwinnable. We’d like to thank our incredible fans from North America, you’ve been patient since 2019, we trust you’ll be patient until we can make it back to play for you again. We’ve gone to the most insane lengths and done beyond our best. Our hearts are broken too.

Northlane is chart-topping, award-winning, progressive metalcore quartet from Australia. Currently composed of founding guitarists Jon Deiley and Josh Smith, drummer Nic Pettersen and vocalist/lyricist Marcus Bridge, their sound weds knotty, angular vamps to complex harmonic structures, jarring dynamics, distortion, and intricate lyrics. They won national attention with Discoveries, their 2011 debut long-player, while 2013's Singularity went to number three. After creating and curating the touring FREE YOUR MIND festival in 2014, the band underwent personnel changes before issuing sophomore album Node in 2015; it topped the charts and took home an ARIA award (Australia's Grammy equivalent). 2017's ARIA-winning Mesmer made the Top 20 on the American Heatseekers chart, while 2019's Alien finished inside the Top Ten and netted the band their third consecutive ARIA Award. 

Named after a song by fellow metalcore band Architects, the band took shape in 2009 in the Greater Western Sydney suburb Blacktown. Their original personnel included guitarists Jon Deiley and Josh Smith, founding vocalist Adrian Fitipaldes, bassist Alex Milovic, and drummer Mitchell Collier, who left after their first tour and was replaced by Nic Pettersen. 

Northlane quickly developed material and made their recorded debut in 2010 with a six-track EP titled Hollow Existence. They played throughout the country in support of the release and established a reputation as a tireless live act. Once Northlane signed with the Melbourne-based, Warner-distributed We Are Unified label, they cut their debut album Discoveries; produced by Shane Edwards and Dave Petrovic, it was recorded at Electric Sun Studios in Arndell Park. It was the last album to feature their second bassist Simon Anderson before he was "fired" from the band, leaving room for the return of Milovic. A modest commercial success, it reached number 85 on the ARIA chart. Despite steady touring, the band followed Discoveries in 2013 with Singularity, produced by Will Putney, whose most prominent credits at that point were on Four Year Strong's Enemy of the World (as an engineer) and the Amity Affliction's Chasing Ghosts (which he mixed and mastered). The set peaked at number three on the ARIA chart. In 2014, after additional tours and festival appearances, founding vocalist Adrian Fitipaldes left the band, which left guitarists John Deiley and Josh Smith the only remaining original members. Marcus Bridge was inserted as the new frontman, and the band released its first single with him, "Rot," by the end of the year. Node, Northlane's third album, was released in 2015. It topped the ARIA chart and subsequently won the ARIA Award for Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album. 

Early 2017 saw the release of the groove-laden "Solar," the first single from their surprise follow-up to Node, Mesmer. On their fifth full-length album, 2019's Alien, Bridge took a deep dive into his conflicted personal history, thematically exploring the challenges of growing up in a broken home and ultimately how he moved on from his past. The epic-length album netted the band its third consecutive ARIA for Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album. 

In November 2021 they issued the video and single for "Echo Chamber." The track and video were created while the band's members were still under quarantine due to Australia's stringent travel restrictions for combatting COVID-19. Simultaneously, Northlane announced it as a preview for the April 2022 release of their sixth studio full-length, Obsidian.
